Latin American feminist political ecology from rural educational communities: community resilience in face of climate risk scenarios

Abstract

This study, based on ecofeminist praxis -a particular finding from a previous research project carried out in rural areas of southern Chile during the avian flu outbreak (2023–2024)- proposes educational guidelines for a Latin American feminist political ecology (EPFL) to contribute to community resilience in rural areas. Using a qualitative ethnographic design methodology and an ecofeminist and decolonial epistemology, we conducted 10 biographical-narrative interviews and participant observation with field notes. Thematic analysis of these records identified three central dimensions for the psychosocial approach to the avian influenza outbreak in rural communities in the Los Lagos region: (i) socio-community; (ii) traditional and emerging knowledge; and (iii) socio-productive and sustainability. These dimensions made it possible to identify the facilitators and barriers to addressing climate risk scenarios, taking into account the territorial specificities of the provinces of Osorno, Llanquihue, and Chiloé. The results contribute to the articulation of care practices, local organization, agroecological knowledge, and multispecific links. Based on these results, we considered the proposal of Funds of Knowledge to integrate territorial knowledge into the formulation of educational guidelines that address the current climate crisis.
