Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present advances in the accumulated knowledge about educational leadership at the school level. The paper identifies and describes the importance of leadership in the development of change and improvement, the paths of leadership influence, and the categories of effective leadership practices. This paper proposes four challenges to the implementation of these leadership practices, these being the realization of actions in specific contexts, the nature of change, leaders needs for support, and the distribution of leadership practices. It concludes with the need for greater understanding of how to adapt the general principles of key practices to different contexts, and the need to learn more about the best strategies to support the dissemination of good practices on a larger scale.
